In Fall 2023, the CRLS Boys hockey team learned that their coach would be stepping aside so that he could spend time with his family after his wife was diagnosed with cancer. The team coaches decided to reach out to the American Cancer Society to sponsor a Hockey Fights Cancer game to show the team’s support for his family, and to raise awareness & support for all cancer patients and their families.
Both the boys and girls hockey teams worked together on this project, with players participating in planning and hosting the event. Team players met for two planning sessions in the weeks before the Hockey Fights Cancer games and planned ways to spread the word and fundraise. The athletes put up signs around school, posted on social media, and reached out to family/friends for donations. On the day of the event, they participated with “I Fight For” signs, and purple tape on their sticks, helmets and socks. When not playing their own games, they hung up “I Fight For” signs, took photos, worked the bake sale (the girls team ran the bake sale during the boys game and the boys team ran the bake sale during the girls game), and then cleaned up. There were 21 CRLS players involved who volunteered 45 hours of their time, and 84 players (from the four teams) who played in the Hockey Fights Cancer games.
At the end of the day, the players can look back on a meaningful experience and know that they raised over $3200 for the American Cancer Society from donations at the door, the bake sale, and direct donations to our Hockey Fights Cancer Site.
