About:
Members of the Durfee High School Football team once again showed what it means to lead with purpose, partnering with the Fall River Public Schools/Stop & Shop Food Pantry to support local families ahead of Thanksgiving. This dedicated group of student-athletes volunteered their time to pack groceries, organize donations, and ensure families received the essentials needed for a warm and comforting holiday meal.
This meaningful effort was made possible through a long-standing collaboration. Nearly nine years ago, FRPS partnered with Stop & Shop and Whitsons to create a reliable food support system for families in need. Today, the pantry provides enough groceries to feed 150 families per month, offering a week’s worth of food delivered directly to homes by FRPS Nutrition drivers.
Each month, different Durfee sports teams step up to help—typically 10–15 student-athletes dedicating about two hours to packing meal bags. The Nutrition Department and student volunteers work together with care and efficiency, ensuring that food reaches those who need it most. During holidays and school breaks, when needs increase significantly, the number of families served and supplies distributed also grows.
Ahead of Thanksgiving, the Durfee football team played its part with heart. Players organized donations, packed turkeys and meal kits, and helped prepare the expanded holiday shipments. Their service reflects the values at the core of Durfee Athletics: teamwork, compassion, responsibility, and community pride.
This initiative does more than meet immediate needs—it empowers young athletes to make a tangible difference. By giving their time to uplift others, these student leaders helped spread holiday cheer throughout the Fall River community.
Durfee’s continued involvement in the FRPS Food Pantry is a testament to the power of partnership and the impact that service-minded students can make when they work together for a shared cause.
