When the world changed in 2020, many organizations had to rethink their events and traditions. Viking Sports Parents, a dedicated parent organization committed to raising scholarship funds for senior athletes, was no exception. Determined not to let the global pandemic dampen their efforts to support student-athletes, they got creative and resilient, finding new ways to fundraise while keeping the community safe. Out of this challenge, a magical event was born: the Jack-O-Lantern Extravaganza.
The Jack-O-Lantern Extravaganza came to life when Viking Sports Parents needed an outdoor, socially distanced alternative to their traditional road race and vendor fairs. They wanted an event that would bring the community together safely—and what better way to do that than with pumpkins, lights, and Halloween spirit?
Fast forward to 2023, and this event has grown into a much-anticipated celebration of fall, community, and support for young athletes. This year, an incredible 86 athletes stepped up to volunteer their time and creativity, carving a total of 148 pumpkins. Each pumpkin became a glowing piece of art, lining the path of what has become a memorable and breathtaking display. Families and friends, about 160 to 170 people, strolled through this illuminated wonderland, marveling at the jack-o’-lanterns and delighting in the playful Halloween inflatables and decorations.
The event turned into more than just a fundraiser—it was a festive community gathering. Little kids in costumes added to the Halloween magic, running and laughing as they played on the nearby fields. Parents enjoyed seeing their neighbors and friends, coming together for a night that was both family-friendly and meaningful. It was an evening filled with laughter, awe, and a sense of unity, all while supporting a fantastic cause.
For Viking Sports Parents, this event is about more than just pumpkins and decorations. It’s about raising vital funds to provide scholarships to senior athletes, recognizing their hard work and dedication to their sport and academics. It’s about the community rallying together to ensure these athletes can pursue their dreams and further their education. Every pumpkin carved and every smile shared at the Jack-O-Lantern Extravaganza helps fuel this mission.
From a simple idea born out of necessity to a beloved annual tradition, the Jack-O-Lantern Extravaganza is a testament to the power of creativity, community, and the commitment of Viking Sports Parents to make a positive impact. As this event continues to grow each year, one thing is certain: the spirit of support, teamwork, and fun it brings will keep shining brightly for many years to come.
