About:
We had our entire boys basketball program participate in this event, so about 35 athletes. The event was mostly for the boys varsity game, but we were collecting donations during the freshman, JV and varsity games. So the event was really from 4:00-8:00 or so.
The event was partly to raise money for the Boston Children’s Hospital but mostly just for emotional support for Nick Gaspar. Many within the basketball community had expressed a desire to honor Nick and to show him support. Nick was diagnosed with a brain tumor for a couple of years and obviously, his whole world has been turned upside down. Nick’s twin brother, Jordan, is on the freshman basketball team. Nick has been a member of the Franklin youth basketball program for a number of years and likely would have been playing for the high school team if healthy.
A few things we did for the event:
1. All athletes wore Carolina blue NG Strong shirts to support Nick. Varsity wore these as their warmup, shooter shirts.
2. Nick is a big UNC Tarheels fan so he loves Carolina blue. We asked all attendees to wear Carolina blue to show support. This includes the Franklin student section, “Rattle City”.
3. The varsity basketball team wore their Carolina blue, alternate jerseys.
4. The Franklin captains issued a Franklin #1 jersey to Nick and made him an honorary captain for the night.
5. Nick strong braclets were sold at the game for $2 each. We raised about $1800 in total. A donation will be made to Boston Children’s hospital in Nick’s name.
A Blood drive is also being held to suport Nick Gaspar and the Boston Children’s Hospital!
