About:
The Hopedale High School Field Hockey Teams once again demonstrated the true meaning of teamwork, compassion, and community during their Annual Cancer Awareness Game on October 26th against Uxbridge High School.
This event holds deep significance for the Hopedale program, as cancer has touched many within their circle — from players and coaches to beloved community members. One varsity athlete lost her father, David Hodgdon, to gallbladder cancer. Their JV coach, Christine Coyle, courageously battled breast cancer and is now in remission, and their dedicated sports photographer, Steve Bassignani, sadly lost his fight against pancreatic cancer. The team also honored a former player whose mother, Cristina Hurley, passed away from pancreatic cancer.
This year’s game carried even greater meaning. After being postponed due to rain, the team played against Uxbridge High School, raising nearly $700 in memory of Steve Bassignani, David Hodgdon, and Cristina Hurley. Joining them on the field for this special night was Judi Bassignani, who attended in honor of her late husband, Steve.
The Hopedale Field Hockey community continues to show that the impact of sports extends far beyond the field — building bonds of empathy, remembrance, and hope that strengthen their entire community.
