About:
The Ludlow Lions High School Hockey team has a very special bond. Most of these students have been playing hockey together since they were very young and have developed a true hockey family. The boys have such respect for all their coaches and came together to help support an Assistant Coach that was diagnosed with MS. A disease he battles with every day and yet spends his time assisting the team and helped achieve our accomplishment of Western Mass Hockey Championship for 2023!
When we started the hockey season we had no goalie. A Senior, Luke Sunderland – stepped up to the plate and said “I played one year in 8th grade, I can try it”. Coach Hess was a goalie so he donated extra time to work with Sunderland on the ice and ultimately this helped the boys win the Championship.
All of these boys love and appreciate him. When we found out that Coach Hess had MS it was a no brainer to these kids to help support his fight against the disease. We created a Team to walk for MS and we all helped push donations, through friends/family and social media. A spokesperson that was at the Longmeadow, MA MS approached me and even stated “It’s so great to see these students come out today and do this”. There was no question in any of these students to help Coach Hess. (Information Provided by Brenda Sanderson)
Hockey Team Raises Funds for MS Awareness
Despite the dreariness of an impending storm this morning, the Ludlow High School hockey team participated in the Walk for Multiple Sclerosis Awareness, raising $2100 for the MS Society of Western
Massachusetts. The regional walk, held annually, stepped off from Longmeadow High School for a trek that took participants on a 3-mile loop through town. Funds raised from the walk go towards
supporting research into medical advances, with an eye toward a cure. The Lions team, captained by Hockey Booster President Brenda Sanderson, was among the top
fundraising groups in the walk. Team members consisted of varsity team members, parents, coaches, and friends of the team, as well as LHS Athletic Trainer Ashley Mourao and her children, Lucas and Sofia.
The team walked in honor of Assistant Coach Dave Hess, who also participated in the fundraiser. Coach Hess was diagnosed with MS in April of 2006, yet he has remained active in coaching at the youth level
and LHS for the past several years.
