About:
this year, due to the craziness, we have not been able to do as many community based projects as normal. Our team motto is “Pay it Forward”.
Each year we do 5 to 6 events. This year we only participated in 4.
-Leaf Raking for senior citizens and families that need help. We did this project this year on Nov. 14th. It is an annual event, usually on the 2nd Saturday in November. We had 60 players help rake leaves and clean up yards for 16 families in Marshfield. The project takes about 5 hours, 8AM to 12PM each year. Every player helped out the full 4 hours. It is a very good event, stressing helping out those that need help. All the kids converge at the last house to clean that one up together. it is for a family with a young child, 7 years old, that has brain cancer. All the kids like to finish at this house.
-Brooks Singer Christmas Tree sales: A family in Marshfield lost there son to an accident. they sell Christmas trees from Thanksgiving until they are gone. We have about 12 players each year help out unloading the 600 trees. This takes about 2 hours and we have been helping out the last 4 years.
-Food Pantry- each year we do 3 food drives, one at the first game, one at our annual Rivalry game vs Duxbury on Martin Luther King Day, and one in February. Each player is asked to bring items to donate and try to make a small financial donation. This again is a very important event, as it helps those less fortunate. We rotate the kids that help out stocking the shelves. Usually about 30 kids help stock the shelves and it takes about an hour.
-Marshfield Youth Hockey Learn to Skate/Play Hockey: the towns youth hockey holds 4 learn to skate/play hockey sessions during Sept and Oct, 1 hour for 4 weeks. we had 36 kids split up and help . We divided up into groups of 9 and each group helped out for 1 hour. this helps teach them patience and about interacting and learning to teach. Also, giving back to their sport
Other events in years past that we could not do this year-
-Youth Hockey coaching- each year we pair up every player with one of the Marshfield youth hockey teams. So each player will help out at a minimum of 5 youth hockey practices during the year, from Sept through February.
-Food Pantry Turkey Dinners- before Thanksgiving,
-Street Hockey Tournament- Every Columbus Day, I , along with our boosters program, runs a street hockey tournament for kids 5-14. It is an all day event. Every kid has to give 2 hours helping out that day, either setting up for the day, coaching a team, reffing a game, or breaking stuff down and cleaning up. The event has about 250-300 kids there playing each year. I started this event in the mid 90’s as an adult tournament, then transitioned it to a your event 13 years ago. this would have been the 24th annual this past Oct.
During the season, the players normally donate 12 hours of their time to our various projects and some kids give more time. We stress to “Pay if Forward” and we feel it is a great lifelong lesson.
