About:
MILFORD, MA — The Stacy Middle School girls’ volleyball team recently held two “Pink Out” charity matches to raise awareness around breast cancer.
The matches raised a total of $1,300 to support the Milford Regional Hospital Oliva Fund for Cancer Care. The opposing teams that participated in the events were Oliver Ames High School in Easton and Nipmuc Regional High School in Mendon-Upton.
The event, led by coaches and Stacy Middle School teachers Celeste Salley and Meredith Purtell, allowed players to dress in pink and collect donations from their friends and families.
There were also inspirational signs and posters around the gym.
The event started as a single match a few years ago, and its popularity has grown significantly. Oliver Ames School in Easton even held its own Pink Out game and donated to the Oliva Fund.
“The players really get behind these efforts. There isn’t a family around that hasn’t been touched by cancer, so it’s personal for a lot of these young ladies,” Salley stated. “With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, our Pink Out event is a highlight of the year in terms of community spirit and doing our part to support the many women and families fighting this awful disease.”
