About:
For the past five years, we have partnered with Newton South High School to participate in a Dig Pink volleyball game (we trade years for which school will host the game). We work with an organization called the Side Out Foundation: https://side-out. org/ which researches Stage IV breast cancer. Our Dig Pink game usually takes place in October during breast cancer awareness month, when we do the bulk of our fundraising. Cumulatively, we have raised over $20,000 doing these fundraisers.
When our season got moved to Fall II this year, we still wanted to do this annual fundraiser and have our Dig Pink game – which is now tonight vs. Wellesley High School. Our girls make warm up t-shirts that say “Needham Digs Pink” on the front. On the back of the shirt, they write “I’m playing for ________” and put down someone who they know impacted by breast cancer. We fundraised (mostly through social media and email) a little in the fall and then again during the past two weeks, and we are currently over $5000.00 for this year.
All athletes in our program get involved, so 50 total.
They help out by pushing out the fundraiser to family and friends via social media and email. They also make shirts for the game.
Probably 1-3 hours per player – in terms of sending out emails to ask for donations, participating in the game itself, making t-shirts, etc.
I played volleyball in college and participated in Dig Pink, so the cause was familiar to me. In addition, my aunt was impacted by breast cancer so the cause is also personal. My team was looking to do more community service/fundraising, so this seemed like a great fit for us.
