About:
At Nipmuc Regional High School, student-athletes are proving that the power of sport goes far beyond the game—uniting their community to support children and families facing pediatric cancer through the inspiring Fight Like a Kid – Team Ava awareness games.
Over the past two years, hundreds of Nipmuc athletes have taken part in these dedicated games, turning ordinary matchups into powerful moments of purpose—raising funds, spreading awareness, and standing in solidarity with families in need.
Turning Games Into Impact
Through a wide range of sports—including girls’ soccer, field hockey, football, cheer, volleyball, golf, basketball, lacrosse, baseball, and softball—teams have embraced the mission of Fight Like a Kid by dedicating games to childhood cancer awareness.
In 2025, these efforts made a direct and meaningful difference. Collectively, teams raised over $5,000 to support Luca, a young boy battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia and the child of a Nipmuc staff member. The funds helped cover a medical bill resulting from a chemotherapy complication—demonstrating the immediate, real-world impact of student-led service.
Building Momentum in 2026
The momentum has only continued to grow. During the winter season, Nipmuc’s boys and girls basketball teams raised $1,833, and the spring season is already underway with more awareness games planned:
- Baseball
- Boys Lacrosse (May 7)
- Softball (May 13)
Each team brings its own energy and creativity to the cause. Student-athletes organize fundraising pages, collaborate with the nonprofit on promotional materials, and rally their community to show up and support.
Leading with Purpose
Game days are transformed into impactful events filled with:
- Concession fundraisers
- 50/50 raffles
- Community pledges
- Awareness gear supporting the cause
These efforts not only raise funds but also amplify awareness for families navigating the challenges of pediatric cancer.
What makes this initiative especially powerful is the student leadership behind it all. From planning and promotion to execution, athletes take ownership of these events—learning firsthand how to use their platform to create meaningful change.
A Growing Legacy of Support
Over the past three years, Fight Like a Kid has supported 10 families through these awareness games, and the impact continues to expand with each season.
For the Nipmuc community, this initiative is more than a fundraiser—it’s a movement. One that reflects compassion, resilience, and the true spirit of education-based athletics.
As these student-athletes continue to “fight like a kid,” they are showing that when a community comes together, sports can become a powerful force for hope and healing.
