About:
The North Andover Youth Center continues to bring the community together through sport and service with the annual Matthew Harty Mito Classic—a powerful street hockey tournament that blends competition with compassion.
Now in its 13th year, the event invites middle school and high school students to take part in a day of hockey, all while raising awareness and funds for MitoAction and honoring the memory of Matthew Harty, a North Andover resident who passed away from mitochondrial disease at just 8 years old.
Playing for a Purpose
More than just a tournament, the Mito Classic serves a meaningful mission. Funds raised directly support the Matthew Harty Camper Fund, which helps children living with mitochondrial disease attend summer camp and provides scholarships for students continuing their education while battling the illness.
Each goal scored and every shift played represents something bigger—hope, opportunity, and support for families navigating difficult challenges.
Community Impact in Action
The event continues to grow year after year, with strong participation from student-athletes across the community. The 2024 tournament saw an incredible turnout, filled with energy, teamwork, and a shared commitment to making a difference.
From organizing teams to fundraising efforts, students play a key role in bringing the event to life—demonstrating leadership and using sport as a platform for good.
Honoring a Legacy
At its core, the Matthew Harty Mito Classic is about keeping Matthew’s spirit alive. Through the dedication of the North Andover community, his legacy continues to inspire young athletes to give back, support others, and lead with heart.
This is what community looks like. This is what service through sport can achieve.
