About:
34 athletes participated, it was a program effort. JV and varsity worked together, along with my JV coach, Gina McCullin, and myself.
The hours outside of the day-of event were minimal for players. Parents and I took on a lot of the pre-game prep/donations. The athletes came to the game early to set up, decorate, and volunteer during the game (JV players), so I would say between 3-5 hours!
A few weeks prior to the game, we all got together to tie dye t-shirts yellow and gray for bladder and brain cancer awareness. Then, on game day, the girls showed up early to decorate the stands with streamers, the fence with plastic cup designs and streamers, and draw positive messages in chalk along the walkway. Some also helped parent volunteers to set up the concession stand and the raffle tables. Once it was game time, everyone made their way to the field!
It was our first Stick it to Cancer game for the girls lacrosse program! I am so impressed with the dedication from the athletes and I was honored to be a part of it. This is my second season coaching after being hired in 2020 and losing that season to covid. I can’t wait to hopefully continue this Stick it to Cancer tradition in the future!
