About:

Shepherd Hill Girls Volleyball held our annual Dig Pink game on Thursday, October 14, 2021. In previous years, we have collected donations and held a bake sale to raise funds for the Side Out Foundation, a non-profit breast cancer charity that raises awareness and funds for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer through volleyball-related events. This year was different in that we chose to raise funds for a local charity that was established by Shepherd Hill alumni, Classes of 2013 and 2016 respectively.

The Vicki Lynn Foundation was founded in honor of Vicki Lynn Bonnette Costello, a parent of Shepherd hill alumni. Vicki passed away in November of 2019 after a long, courageous battle with metastatic breast cancer. Vicki was the kindest and sweetest soul and touched the hearts of everyone she met. Every day she looked out for others more than her own self even with the struggles she went through.

Volunteering at the NICU, always attending her children’s big life events, and always there to listen when someone needed it. While Vicki was fighting her fight, another local charity donated $1,000 to help her pay her medical bills, pay for groceries, or just have a little weekend away to get away from the everyday difficulties of her illness. It was a very nice surprise and her family knew she was incredibly grateful to receive it. That is the goal of the Vicki Lynn Foundation this charity: to help others in need, whether it be cancer, the NICU, or a family that is going through a tough time.

Last year, in a year during the COVID-19 pandemic, the foundation raised and donated $750 dollars to a local family in Worcester dealing with a breast cancer diagnosis. This year the foundation hopes to raise and donate $3,000 raised in order to help more people/families. On October 14, 2021, Shepherd Hill Girls Volleyball raised $300 for the Vicki Lynn Foundation, helping the charity to reach their goal of $3,000. The program was interested in contributing to a charity knowing that the funds go to local families in/around our community. Moving forward, we hope to donate all funds raised during our future Dig Pink events to the Vicki Lynn Foundation.

Our Girls Volleyball program consists of a Varsity and JV1 teams. The event involved 26 athletes tie-dying their game shirts pink for breast cancer awareness, making posters that were hung around the school, baking goods, and tending as cashiers at the bake sale during the game for a total of 16 hours across four days.
