About:
Volunteering at the Walk for Hospice is something we do as a team every fall. Our school hosts the event, so basically we gather as a team (130 or so student athletes) prior to the start of the race so we are in position to welcome the walkers to our campus. I disperse them throughout the course in pods of 3-4 players each so no part of the course is left unmanned for too great a distance. We are there to cheer on and celebrate the walkers, many of whom are walking in memory of a loved one. We recognize the seriousness of the day but we also try our best to bring appropriate energy to the event by clapping and offering a “good morning” to the walkers. Once the last wave goes by each pod, our players all walk towards the finishing portion of the walk so we are one big solid group cheering on all the walkers as they finish. We line both sides of the street. We brought with us a boom box this year to help encourage the walkers and put smiles on some faces. It was well received.
Our kids volunteer for this and do it without hesitation. They are genuinely happy to support the event and the people participating.
