About:
The annual Derek Hines Memorial Hockey Game.
Derek was a ’99 graduate of St. John’s, where he played both lacrosse and hockey. He would go on to play hockey and graduate from the US Military Academy at West Point in 2003. Tragically, Derek was killed in combat in Afghanistan in September of 2005. In his memory and to raise funds for the Derek Hines Soldiers Assistance Fund, we hold an annual memorial game, the past few years of which have been played against Newburyport, Derek’s hometown. More information about Derek can be found here:
I have also attached a photo of some of our donations to Derek’s parents at the start of our memorial games.

This is a complete team effort….we have 26 players on varsity and all are expected to advertise and reach out to potential donors.
Time commitment will vary, but with so many involved, it is not a heavy load per person. In normal times (pre-Covid), the parents would have organized a social night out (comedy show, etc.), including a raffle and silent auction items. The players would help to secure auction items and be present at the social event to help out with logistics. Due to Covid-related school rules, we cannot congregate in person this year, so it will be a simple “request for cash donations” this year.
This year, players are asked to connect with as many potential donors as possible, through their contact lists and social media connections, or simply by word of mouth. Some may donate out of their funds, along with a donation from their parents. The players also design their own “Hines Game” jerseys, specific to this event and the publicity around the jerseys generates a lot of interest in the event. In pre-Covid years, they would have also helped out with the set-up and break-down of the social event, in addition to driving around to pick up donations of items for our raffle and silent auction. Lastly, to further our association with Derek Hines and the Soldiers’ Assistance Fund, the team also runs in the Derek Hines Memorial Road Race, which is held in Newburyport every June.
