About:
We had about 70 athletes help out, which is most of the team (the roster is at 83 kids)
They helped for 2 hours in the St. Mary’s cafeteria
We made and bagged sandwiches for My Brother’s Table, a local food bank that serves the community. A number of our athletes (and myself) in the past have volunteered there, serving or making food at lunch or dinner time. Due to the pandemic, the way My Brother’s Table is functioning has changed. Everything is now done in bagged form, with volunteers putting together the lunches or dinners and the patrons coming in and taking the meals with them. The days of the crowded dining room are unfortunately over, so we weren’t sure the best way to help out. We figured out: what if we did the sandwich making and bagging so the other, day to day volunteers could focus on other things? With a huge roster (the team nearly doubled in size this year), I knew we could make an impact. We also took some donated goods and brought them to a local community fridge, which remains open for anyone in the community who needs it.
The question that myself, my fellow coaches, the parents, and the captains had was: what can we do with such a big team that we couldn’t do before? This activity was one of those ideas and being able to do it in a COVID-safe way was really fantastic. Here is a Facebook post My Brother’s Table made about it: https://www.facebook.com/ MBTLYNN/photos/a. 2730593060315119/ 6873176912723359
