About:
Ursuline & Fontbonne Athletes joining forces to serve their community.
The girls teamed up to honor their neighbor & bring the neighborhood together while staying safe by giving out duffy clean up crew buckets to each family.
Their neighbor Eddie Duffy always went around the neighborhood with a bucket to keep the neighborhood tidy. They organized seasonal clean up days at his beloved Crane Park which his house overlooked. They designed & sold Duffy clean up crew shirts. They got sponsors, sold shirts, & gathered donations for a memorial bench in his name.
They raised $1800 & the bench was unveiled at a recent EMNA (East Milton Neighborhood Association) event. The event was to award the recipients of the Manning Award. The girls had nominated Duffy posthumously & he won for the previous year along with the current year’s winner Bob Sweeney.
Duffy’s family attended & received the award in his place. They were happy to see the granite bench with Duffy’s name on it also.
The girls were recognized for all their work to help bring this to fruition. They were mentioned in the speeches & were called up & presented with bouquets of flowers.
The girls tallied about 30 hours in all.
Molly Wells Ursuline Academy ‘22 Greta McEvoy Fontbonne ‘23 & Caroline Costello Fontbonne ‘23 all played Varsity Softball against each other but grew up playing Milton Girls Softball together as Milton neighbors. They came together for this project & it was really rewarding for them all.
They were inspired by Duffy who did so much for the town throughout his life. They felt that they brought neighbors together young & old during a tough time while keeping everyone safe. It was a perfect neighborhood service project during covid because everyone could go around with their own families cleaning their area or common areas without worrying. It meant a lot to the neighbors especially their special neighbor Donna Ronan who was in the photo with them. They made her a special shirt with her name on it. She was over the moon. These kids are something special.
