On 10/14, WA Cheer volunteered at the See A New Sun Foundation’s Gala for Hope. This is a local organization supporting mental health and suicide prevention through many avenues, including scholarship awards for local students (including Westford) who choose a mental health degree field. The girls handled the registration check ins, place seatings, and the raffle ticket sales. They were eager and excited to help, and I was so impressed, yet again, but their maturity, team work and problem solving. They were able to hear the speakers who spoke about how suicide impacted their lives, and were so moved by them. They have already made me promise to make arrangements to volunteer again next year.
I know I say it often, but I have to say it again – I coach a team of incredible humans. The life skills that team sports provides that are often overshadowed by a win or a loss just shine through with them. They are such an inclusive, caring, thoughtful, aware group of girls. I couldn’t be more proud to coach them, and to have the opportunity to arrange for these opportunities to give back to our community as part of their season. I know how proud our school and our town is of them. We have not had a competition yet this season, but they are already champions in my mind! — Coach Dawn Priest
