About:
We typically do the food pantry day every year around Christmas time. Last year was the first in a while that we hadn’t because of covid. The woman who runs it had three sons who all played hockey in our program so we got started probably in 2015-16 I think.
This past weekend, we had over 30 of our boys’ hockey players help out with food distribution for approximately 3 hours. Basically the boys meet someone who is there to pick up holiday meals for themselves and/or their family. Our boys meet these folks after they check in and the boys help carry all their food to their cars and load them up. There are a lot of disabled or elderly people who come so it’s important the boys are willing to step in and offer to hold and lift things for people.
We started doing this because the food pantry needed help especially with the holiday meals. There are quite a few heavy items and can be difficult for some people to carry and hold. I always felt it was important for our kids to realize that maybe while they have it pretty good, there are some who may struggle to afford meals and food items and that it’s important to give back to the community.
