Health classes at Hicksville Middle School recently took an active role in unifying the building in observance of Unity Day, a day of global recognition designed to bring communities together to promote acceptance, inclusion and kindness and take a stand against bullying.
Students and staff from throughout the building wore the color orange to school on Oct. 23 and Oct. 24. Orange is the designated color that signifies unity against bullying. Classes also collaborated on a large mural in the health wing which contained messages such as “United for Kindness” and “Take a Stand Against Bullying.” The mural illustrates Long Island and contains cutouts of lighthouses that were signed by every student as a pledge to be kind to everyone while also acting as an upstander against bullying. The lighthouses are symbolic, serving as beacons of hope for victims of bullying.
Although the focus for these days was on spreading a unifying spirit, the pledges made by the students are timeless.
