Herricks Public Schools joined schools across the nation in celebrating Unity Day on Oct. 21, with students and staff wearing orange and participating in activities that promoted kindness, acceptance and inclusion.
Unity Day, the signature event of National Bullying Prevention Month, encourages school communities to take a stand against bullying and show their support for one another. The color orange serves as a visible symbol of unity and a shared commitment to creating welcoming, inclusive environments.
At Herricks High School, students and staff gathered in the courtyard for a celebration centered on connection and community. Students created a collaborative orange paper chain, with each link representing a personal experience or moment when they felt a sense of unity at school. Students also distributed mental health awareness resources and informational brochures, including reminders about the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Adding to the festivities, the high school PTA arranged for a coffee truck to visit the courtyard and serve students, bringing an extra treat to the day’s celebration.
At Center Street and Searingtown elementary schools, students marked the occasion by creating friendship bracelets, a simple but meaningful activity that reinforced the importance of friendship, kindness and supporting one another.
Through these activities, Herricks students across grade levels demonstrated that even small acts of kindness can help build a stronger, more connected school community.
