Generous students, families and staff members throughout the Garden City Public Schools have participated in several efforts to bring toys and winter necessities to families in need this holiday season.
For the 20th year, the district supported the United States Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots donation effort. Hemlock, Homestead, Locust and Stewart schools all accommodated donation boxes that were filled with gifts during the month of December. Members of the Marine Corps stopped by each of the primary buildings to accept the items and personally thank students and staff members, and Stewart delivered their gifts to the Toys for Tots coordinators.
Stratford School families filled two cars with more than 30 bags of toys for the Hance Family Foundation, which provides the gifts to families and agencies in need. Garden City Middle School gathered an abundance of toys for NYU Langone Hospital’s annual drive.
The High School has been fundraising for its annual Adopt-a-Family initiative and students organized a coat donation drop-off for the INN thanks to the efforts of senior John Scarlata, members of the soccer team and other volunteers.
“The spirit of giving is always strong in Garden City, especially during the holidays,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kusum Sinha. “This year in particular, our efforts will go a long way. I am proud of our students for always thinking of others!”
