Students and staff from Wellington C. Mepham High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District assembled Nov. 3 at the school’s track for a Light the Night walk benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
The Mepham LEO Club and Kickline raised more than $1,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through donations and by selling purple ribbons and light up necklaces both before and after the event.
“We are walking to honor the students and faculty who have been affected by these blood cancers,” explained Kerry Dennis, a kickline coach/social studies and co-organizer.
Organizers also included science teachers/LEO Club faculty advisers Josephine Parlagreco and Neeru Partap.
“They are an amazing group of students who always want to do more for the community,” added Partap. “The Light the Night event was fun, but also touching as we thought of all the people in our lives who have had cancer.”
