At Washington Drive Primary School, kindergarten, first and second grade students in Kelly Lewis’ class celebrated their classmates Lily and Jack for Down Syndrome Awareness Month.
Students were joined by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Francesco Ianni, Washington Drive Principal Kathryn McNally and members of the district’s board of education to watch a video Lily made of herself reading “No, David,” by David Shannon.
Afterwards, students and teachers created hearts with words of kindness for their friends. Lily and Jack were described as friendly, smart, joyful and polite.
Lily joined Mrs. Lewis’ class last year as a kindergartner and began the new school year in September as a first grader. “She is a sweet, smart, funny little girl who lights up our classroom,” Mrs. Lewis said. Jack joined his classmates in September as a kindergartner and “is handsome, with a witty sense of humor and charm,” Mrs. Lewis said. “He brings us joy and laughter daily.”
